5 Reasons Adults Should Visit Disney’s Aulani
Aulani is a Disney resort and spa located in Oahu, Hawaii. The resort is beautiful and it has amazing Disney details. But is Disney’s Aulani a good option for adults? Sadly, we have not yet stayed at Aulani. However, we recruited the amazing Rochelle to be our guest writer for this post and answer this important question! Rochelle lives in Hawaii and is an expert on everying related to Disney’s Aulani resort.
In this post, Rochelle covers the top 5 reasons adults should visit Aulani. We met Rochelle about a year ago through her awesome Disney Instagram account @_pixie_dust_nails. Rochelle’s Top 5 Reasons to Visit Disney’s Aulani
Everyone dreams of visiting Hawaiʻi and Disney lovers dream of visiting of Aulani. Aulani is the perfect blend of Hawaiʻi and Disney and offers a relaxing, magical escape in the most beautiful place in the world. Whether youʻre looking for a quick romatic getaway or a long Hawaiian vacation, Aulani has something for everyone … especially adults! Here are my top 5 reasons adults should vacation at Disney’s Aulani.
#1 Disney Magic
Disney magic is everywhere at Aulani. Aulani itself is an amazingly beautiful hotel on the Leeward coast of O‘ahu. It truly is the perfect blend of Hawai‘i and Disney. The architecture, details and ambiance are truly Hawaiian with pixie dust sprinkled throughout the resort. Disney characters in their local Hawaiian attire roam around the pool area and resort to give you the true Disney magic. Also hidden Mickeys abound from the bedcovers in the room to the chopsticks when you eat. Aulani even has their own CD of Disney songs sung in Hawaiian by well known Hawaiian musical artists.
Aulani offers PhotoPass service throughout the resort incuding the resort pools. And just like in the parks, PhotoPass CM will take your photos and load it on to a digital, waterproof band for you to retrieve your photos from your stay. Cast Members go out of their way to provide you with stellar service that Disney is known for from the moment you arrive. Disney’s attention to details truly creates a legendary magical experience for everyone, including adults.
#2 Swim and Sun
Everyone dreams of coming to Hawaii to swim and sun. The beach at Aulani has an abundance of sunshine and water activities to enjoy. Aulani is right on the beach at Ko Olina Lagoon where guests can relax and bask under the warm Hawaiian sun, frolic on a sandy beach, and swim and play. There are many water activities including swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding and even a canoe ride where you may be lucky enough to see dolphins and turtles frolicking in the ocean. (Some of these water activities are for an additional fee.)
The Aulani resort pools are the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. You can lounge poolside, ride the water slides, float on the lazy river and even enjoy a tropical drink. The Wailana Pool is a secluded pool with a water wall that is reserved for adults only. Adults will also love the Wailana Pool Bar just a few steps away, a full bar that offers refreshing drinks and an impressive menu selection. Aulani also has several whirlpool spas in the resort area to unwind and relax. Two infinity whirlpool spas at ‘Alohi Point are for adults only with sweeeping ocean views and spectacular sunset views.
Note: August 19 through December 17, 2019 Aulani will be refurbishing some of their pools and whirlpool spas. See Aulani website for more specific information. Also, there are lifeguards on duty in the water pools on Aulani property, however, no lifeguard on duty at the lagoon. Be sensible and be sure to apply sunscreen and stay hydrated.
#3 Activities and Entertainment
Aulani has a multitude of activities for guests of all ages and interests. The Daily ‘Iwa (daily activity schedule in your room and in the lobby) shows the list of classes and activities for guests. Most activities are complimentary; however some activities require reservations. Some of the activities have an additional cost, some activites are for families, and some activities are for adults only. Go to the Pau Hana Room (Community Hall) in the morning to sign up for classes, and be sure to go early as some classes fill up quickly.
Guests can enjoy activities such as Sunrise Yoga and other fitness activites on the beach; Animation classes (similar to Animation Academy in the Parks), Mickey ear making, Fish Feeding, Lei Making, Hula and ‘Ukulele classes, Painting Party, Stargazing and many other fun activities with lots of aloha and a little bit of pixie dust.
A few activities that adults will especially enjoy are:
- Canvas & Cocktails – Aulani inspired painting class for adults only
- Laniwai Spa – Aulani’s full service spa, salon and fitness center
- Ko Olina Golf Club – a championship course across the street and walking distance from Aulani with a Mickey shaped bunker
Of course, a trip to Aulani would not be complete without going to Ka Wa‘a Lū‘au, which includes an incredible buffet dinner and authentic lū‘au entertainment, including traditional Hawaiian pre-show activites, and Mickey and Minnie dancing the Aulani Hula.
Aulani has a variety amazing places to eat both casual and elegant with delicious food infused with local flavors. My favorites are:
Makahiki Buffet is a magical Disney Character meal and a must on your visit for breakfast or dinner. (Characters are not available every evening, check schedule).
‘Ama‘Ama is a beautiful ocean view restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with live Hawaiian entertainment on some evenings.
The ‘Ōlelo Room is a lounge inspired by the Hawaiian language and perfect for drinks, appetizers and live Hawaiian entertainment. It is an experience like no other in Hawai‘i and servers speak to you in Hawaiian.
Ulu Cafe has an assortment of grab and go breakfast, lunch and dinner and hot entrees; a huge selection of snacks, including Mickey cookies, Mickey ice cream and even Dole Whips!
Little ‘Opihi’s is a snack shop on the beach that offers a variety of grab and go snacks including Dole whip floats and churros!
There are also a variety of snacks and treats you will want to try. Some of my favorites include Mickey musubi, Mickey shave ice, Dole whips (and floats), tropical drinks and other local style treats that can be found throughout the resort. Room Service is also available and worth the splurge for the adorable Aulani themed desserts.
Pro Tip: Get your refillable Disney tumbler on your first day for unlimited refills on fountain sodas, coffee, tea and cocoa during your stay. Note: Reservations are recommended for Makahiki and ‘Ama‘Ama. If you are celebrating a special occasion, be sure to let your server know or include it in your reservation.
One of the best ways to remember your Aulani vacation is shopping for Disney merchandise to help keep the memories of your Hawaiian vacation alive for years to come. Aulani has some of the best Disney merchandise with a tropical flair, many of which are exclusive and found no where else.
Kālepa’s Store – located near the lobby, you will find everything from ears to mugs to suitcases and local style snacks. Kālepa’s has an abundance of Mickey ears and clothes that you will find nowhere else. The Duffy and friends collection, including ‘Olu, Duffy’s newest friend and an Aulani exclusive, are some of the most popular collectibles. If you are looking for a legendary local treat, be sure to get the chocolate dipped Mickey macadamia shortbread cookies. Best Mickey cookie ever!
Hale Manu – located near the lobby this Disney boutique has designer clothes, jewelry and bags, including Aulani exclusive Pandora charms.
The Lava Shack – located near the pool, this small shop has beach gear including Aulani exclusive swim wear.
Laniwai Spa also offers a variety of local inspired spa products.
Be sure to check the stores frequently as they always have new merchandise arriving. If you get a chance to venture into Honolulu, you will want to visit the Disney Store at Ala Moana Center for more exclusive Hawai‘i Disney collectibles.
Bonus Tips: A few more things to know about Aulani
Aunty’s Beach House is a complimentary kids club for guests 3 to 12. Parents will want to take advantage of this so you can have a “date day or night” on property if you are traveling with children. Children must be registered, and you can pre-register your child online before arrival.
Luana Lounge is a complimentary lounge area that includes showers and lockers, and a cozy lounge area with sofas, TVs, and a computer and printer for guests who arrive before check in or need to stay after check out.
Celebrations are extra magical when you do it Disney style and Aulani is no exception. If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary, honeymoon or just celebrating your Disney love and life, you can order specialty items delivered to your room including desserts and gift baskets. And just like in the parks, Aulani has exclusive buttons to help celebrate your special occasion.
Holidays are extra magical at Aulani with holiday themed meals and treats and characters dressed for the festivities.
Aulani truly is a special place with just the perfect amount of Aloha spirit and Disney magic located in one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the world. Although Aulani is expensive, like anything Disney, you are paying for the over the top, legendary experience that Disney is known for. There are enough activities to stay on property your entire stay, whether you are staying for one night or one week. There is an abundance of activities for adults. Additionally, there are adult only places to relax, unwind and rejuvenate. If Aulani is completely out of your budget, you can always visit the property for a few hours to dine or shop (call Aulani for information on parking validation). An Aulani vacation is a must for every Disney lover.
