Memory Maker – Is it worth it?
Memory Maker – Is it worth it?
Memory Maker gives Disney World guests access to “Unlimited digital downloads of all your Disney PhotoPass photos and videos.” Disney PhotoPass photos include more than just theme park ride pictures. Cast members take photos of character encounters, some dining experiences, and at various locations throughout the parks. Fortunately, the PhotoPass cast members are easy to identify because they will be holding a camera, have a set uniform, and will sometimes also have props with them. Whether or not you should get Memory Maker depends on you and your party.
To save a picture to Memory Maker, just scan your magic band or park ticket. If it is a ride photo, there is often a scanner at the end of the ride. Just tap your magic band or card to the one that is below your ride photo. Some rides will automatically pick up your magic band and connect the photo to your My Disney Experience account. However, be aware that many Disney World rides do not have a photo included on the ride. If you have a cast member take your photo, they will either scan your magic band or card before or after they take the series of photos.
You can view your photos in the My Disney Experience App or Online, usually within 24 hours of having the photo taken. Many times, we have had our photos show up within an hour of being taken. You can download the photos easily on your phone. The only downside to downloading on your phone is that they will be downloaded one at a time. Through the website, you can download batches of photos. If neither of these options work for you, you can check with Disney about alternative download methods.
What is a Magic Shot?
In addition to traditional photographs, Disney PhotoPass also includes magic shots. As Disney states “Magic shots add Disney Characters and other fun surprises to your photos after they’re taken.” What this means is the cast member will as you to do something or look somewhere specific and when you see your photo later, Disney will add in a character or Disney-related item.
What is the cost of Memory Maker?
The Advanced Purchase price for Memory Maker is currently $169 and is nonrefundable. Yes, you read that correctly. Advanced purchase means that you will not get access to photos taken prior to the purchase date. If you want access to prior or current photos and have not previously purchased Memory Maker, the cost is $199. Most annual passes come with access to PhotoPass photos, so if you have an annual pass that includes it, you are set.
Is it worth purchasing?
It completely depends. Most cast members, particularly PhotoPass cast members are happy to take a photo for you with your cell phone after they take their Disney picture of you. If you are okay with cell phone pictures or whatever camera you bring with you, then Memory Maker may not be the best use of your money. If you do not purchase it, you will only miss out on ride photos and magic shots. However, you should decide how important these aspects are to you and your travel group.
We have Memory Maker with our annual pass and really enjoy it. We like the ride pictures and character pictures. But for us, it is not an extra cost. If we had purchased Memory Maker for a certain trip, I think we would feel more pressure to take a lot of PhotoPass photos in order to make sure we got our money’s worth.
If you purchase Memory Maker, take advantage of the benefits and do the Advanced Purchase price. First, everyone in your party does not need Memory Maker. As long as one person has Memory Maker, all people in the party will be able to see the photos through My Disney Experience. Worst case if it doesn’t link properly, the person with Memory Maker can download all the pictures after the fact and share the photos with everyone in the party. Just make sure the person that purchased Memory Maker is the one who scans their bands when saving the PhotoPass photos.
